The Japanese people’s “move away from rice” is getting serious
According to the “Table of Supply and Demand of Food” released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in August 2022, the consumption of rice has been on a downward trend since its peak of 118 kg in fiscal 1962. In particular, consumption in FY 2020 was 50.8 kg, less than half the peak in recent years.
On the other hand, rice is considered a key component of food security because it maintains a near 100% domestic self-sufficiency rate, and it is also considered an important crop in terms of health because it contains not only carbohydrate, one of the three major nutrients, as its main component, but also protein, vitamins, and minerals necessary for body formation. It is considered to be an important crop in terms of health.
